A Ruby Jubilee for Monty Python

As Monty Python celebrates its 40th anniversary this month, one of Black Sheep Brewery’s quirky brands, Holy Grail, also celebrates its 10th birthday. Introduced in 1999 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the cult sketch series, the pale English brew is definitely no marketing gimmick!

Managing Director at Black Sheep Brewery, Paul Theakston said: “Holy Grail was originally introduced as a limited edition product but has gained in popularity to become one of our most loved beers and is still being brewed ten years later. It is a sought after drink among pale ale drinkers and curious Monty Python fans alike. It is Black Sheep Brewery’s top selling ale in America.”

Black Sheep Brewery was commissioned by the Python team to brew the beer to commemorate the 30th anniversary which fits well with Paul Theakston’s own sense of humour.

Holy Grail is brewed using Whitbread hops, a variety of medium intensity known for its distinct citrus aroma and flavour. Head Brewer at Black Sheep, Alan Dunn describes the brewing process giving the beer its unique taste. He said: “The boiled wort passes through a hop-back which is a chamber containing whole leaf hops. This process combines the malt and hops flavour to intensify the fruity aroma on the nose and helps to leaven the ale’s sweetness to make for a balanced brew.”

A group of six comedians, including Eric Idle and John Cleese, created Monty Python’s Flying Circus which first aired on BBC 2 on the 5th October 1969. The signature sketches continue to generate millions in DVD sales, while clips on YouTube have drawn 18 million views since last November.  The beer’s name refers to the comedians’ first feature film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, from 1975.

As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations, the group will be performing in a new play in Los Angeles based on the classic TV sketches, launching a six part documentary on the IFC Channel, unveiling a book describing live performances, and holding a Q&A session in New York with a rare coming together of the five surviving members.
